What Is a Curved Guardrail Beam?

A curved guardrail beam is a W-beam or Thrie-beam rail that is bent in the factory to a set radius. It is used where a straight rail cannot follow the road, such as tight curves, intersections, driveways, roundabouts and the wrap-around at bridge ends.

SinoGuardrail shop-curves rails to the radius, curve direction and hole pattern on your drawing, then hot-dip galvanizes the finished beam.

Curved Guardrail Key Facts

  • Many road authorities require shop-curved rail when the radius is about 45 m (150 ft) or less. Above that, straight rails can usually follow the curve during installation.
  • Rails are curved before galvanizing, so the zinc coating is not cracked by bending.
  • Both W-beam and Thrie-beam rails can be curved.
  • The order must state the radius, curve direction (concave or convex to traffic), arc length and hole positions.
  • Curved rails use the same posts, spacers and bolts as straight rails.

Where Curved Guardrail Is Used

  • Tight road curves and hairpin bends on mountain roads
  • Intersections and driveways where the barrier turns around a corner
  • Roundabouts and small-radius ramps
  • Bridge ends, where the rail wraps around the end of a parapet
  • Radius end sections that turn the rail away from traffic

Concave and Convex Curves

The curve direction is described from the traffic side of the rail. Getting it wrong means the rail cannot be installed, so it must be clear on the drawing.

Curve typeRail face toward trafficTypical location
Concave (inside curve)Curves toward the trafficInside of a bend, around a corner the vehicle drives inside of
Convex (outside curve)Curves away from the trafficOutside of a bend, wrap-around at bridge ends and corners

What to Send for a Curved Guardrail Quote

  • Radius of each curved section (or the road layout drawing)
  • Curve direction: concave or convex to traffic
  • Arc length or number of rails per curve
  • Rail profile (W-beam or Thrie-beam), thickness and coating
  • Post spacing on the curve and hole positions
  • Quantity, destination port and delivery date

Tip: mark each curved rail with its location on the drawing. We will label the bundles the same way, so the installation crew can find the right rail on site.

Curved rails are usually ordered together with straight rails and end parts. See W-beam guardrail, Thrie-beam guardrail, the W-beam to Thrie-beam transition for connections to bridges, and our guardrail end treatment.

  • One shipment: rails, posts, spacers, bolts and end treatments packed and marked together.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need a curved guardrail beam instead of a straight one?

When the curve is too tight for straight rails to follow. Many authorities set the limit at about 45 m (150 ft) radius. Always follow your project specification.

Can you curve Thrie-beam guardrail?

Yes. We curve both W-beam and Thrie-beam rails to the radius on your drawing.

Is the rail galvanized before or after curving?

After. Curving first and galvanizing second keeps the zinc coating complete and free of bending cracks.

What is the smallest radius you can make?

It depends on the profile and thickness. Send the drawing and we will confirm the radius before quoting.

Request a Curved Guardrail Beam Quote

Send the radius, curve direction, rail profile, quantity and destination port. We will check the drawing and quote the curved rails with all matching parts.
