What Is a Thrie-Beam Guardrail?

A Thrie-beam guardrail is a roadside barrier made of corrugated steel rails with a three-wave profile. It is taller and stiffer than a W-beam rail, so it deflects less when hit. That makes it a common choice for bridge approaches, medians and other high-risk sections. For a full explanation, read what is a Thrie-beam guardrail.

Thrie-Beam vs W-Beam in Three Points

  • Profile: Thrie-beam has three waves (about 506 mm wide); W-beam has two (about 310 mm wide).
  • Stiffness: Thrie-beam is stiffer and deflects less, which helps where space behind the barrier is limited.
  • Use: W-beam suits most roadsides; Thrie-beam is used at bridges, transitions and high-risk curves.

See the detailed comparison in W-beam vs Thrie-beam guardrail.

Thrie-Beam Guardrail FAQ

When should I use Thrie-beam instead of W-beam?

Use Thrie-beam where the project design calls for it, usually at bridge approaches, transitions, medians and locations with heavy vehicles or limited space behind the barrier.

Can Thrie-beam use the same posts as W-beam?

Often the post types are similar, but spacers, hole positions and mounting height are different. Always follow the system drawing. See our guardrail posts.

Can you supply the full Thrie-beam system?

Yes. We supply rails, posts, spacers, bolts, transitions and terminals in one shipment, checked against your BOQ. Send your drawing through our contact page.
