Roller Barrier Systems: Types and Applications
What Is a Roller Barrier?
A roller barrier is a road safety barrier with rotating rollers mounted on steel posts and rails. The rollers are made of soft EVA or PU. When a vehicle hits them, they turn and guide the vehicle along the barrier. It is used on sharp curves, ramps, bridge approaches and other high-risk spots.
Roller Barrier Systems Compared
| Product | Best for |
|---|---|
| Safety roller barrier system | Rollers, posts, rails and fixings for a complete run |
| Trigard rotor roller barrier | Projects that name the Trigard rotor design |
| Country supply pages | Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand projects |
Advantages of Roller Barriers
- Guides the vehicle: the rollers turn on impact, so the vehicle is pushed along the barrier, not stopped dead.
- Less damage: soft EVA or PU rollers absorb part of the impact energy. This can reduce damage to the car and the barrier.
- Easy to see: bright yellow or orange rollers with reflective strips mark the road edge at night and in rain.
- Quick repair: a damaged roller can be replaced on its own, without changing the whole run.
Roller barriers cost more per metre than a standard W-beam guardrail. Most projects use them only at curves and other high-risk spots.
Roller Barrier FAQ
Who invented the roller barrier?
The modern rotating roller barrier was developed in South Korea by ETI Ltd., a company founded in 2006. It was sold as the Rolling Barrier Guardrail System. Today several makers produce roller barriers that work on the same principle.
Is a roller barrier the same as an anti-climb roller?
No. An anti-climb roller is a security product. It spins on top of a wall or fence, so people and animals cannot climb over. A roller barrier is a road safety product that guides vehicles back to the road. We make road roller barriers, not security rollers.
Where should a roller barrier be installed?
Use it where the road authority approves it, such as tight curves, ramps, intersections and bridge approaches. For the full system, see the safety roller barrier page.
