Highway guardrail cost per foot or per meter depends mainly on steel weight. Rail thickness, post size and spacing, zinc coating, end terminals and freight make up the rest. This guide shows how to calculate a supply price instead of guessing from a single number.
Prices in this guide are explained as cost drivers and relative indexes, not fixed quotes. Steel and zinc prices change weekly. Figures were checked in October 2026.
A supply quote for steel beam guardrail usually follows this logic:
To convert, divide the price per meter by 3.281 to get the price per foot. Installation labour, traffic control and site work are not part of a supply price.
Steel is the largest cost item. A thicker rail adds weight directly. Moving a W-beam rail from 2.67 mm (AASHTO Class A) to 4.0 mm adds about 50% to rail weight.
Buyers often overlook posts. In a standard W-beam system, the posts weigh more than the rail. Closer post spacing on curves or near hazards raises cost per meter. See our H, Sigma, U, C and round posts for options.
Hot-dip galvanizing is priced by zinc mass. Type I is 550 g/m² (about 77 µm). Type II is 1100 g/m² (about 154 µm), so it uses roughly twice the zinc. Choose the class your specification requires.
End terminals, thrie-beam transitions and bridge connections cost more per piece than standard rails. Short runs with many terminals therefore have a higher average price per meter. Include bolts, spacers and delineators in the same quote.
Steel guardrail usually reaches the container weight limit before it fills the volume. Freight is therefore closer to a cost per tonne than per meter. Read our W-beam guardrail container loading guide for 20GP and 40HQ planning.
The table uses our reference configurations. Weights are calculated from nominal dimensions and include rail, post, spacer and bolts.
| System | Reference configuration | Steel weight per meter | Steel weight per foot |
|---|---|---|---|
| W-beam | Rail 4130 × 310 × 82 × 2.67 mm; H post W150×13.5 × 1830 mm; spacer 360 mm; post spacing 1905 mm | About 34 kg/m | About 10.5 kg/ft |
| W-beam, 4.0 mm rail | Same as above with 4.0 mm rail | About 40 kg/m | About 12 kg/ft |
| Thrie-beam | Rail 4130 × 510 × 82 × 2.8 mm; H post W150×13.5 × 1980 mm; spacer 554 mm; backup plate; post spacing 1905 mm | About 46 kg/m | About 14 kg/ft |
Use these weights only for budgeting. Your drawing, post length and spacing decide the final weight.
Take 1,000 m (about 3,281 ft) of the reference W-beam system above.
Example RFQ line: W-beam guardrail, 4130 × 310 × 82 × 2.67 mm, Q235B, hot-dip galvanized 550 g/m², 1,000 m, with H posts W150×13.5 × 1830 mm, spacers, bolts and 2 end terminals, CIF Port Klang.
The table compares relative supply cost per meter. W-beam is the base (1.0). Updated October 2026.
| System | Relative cost per meter | Main cost drivers | Product page |
|---|---|---|---|
| W-beam guardrail | 1.0 (base) | Rail thickness, posts, zinc class | W-beam guardrail |
| Thrie-beam guardrail | About 1.3–1.4 | Wider rail, longer posts, larger spacers | Thrie-beam guardrail |
| Roller barrier | About 2–3 | Rollers, steel frame, posts, tested configuration | Roller barrier |
The W-beam and thrie-beam ratio comes from steel weight. The roller barrier range is indicative and depends on the quoted system.
W-beam is the lowest-cost option for most roadside and median runs. Thickness and post choice change the price most. Get a W-beam guardrail quote.
Thrie beam guardrail cost is higher because the rail is wider and the posts are longer. It also needs larger spacers and backup plates. Use it where your specification requires higher containment, such as bridge approaches. Get a thrie-beam guardrail quote.
Highway roller barrier cost is quoted per system, not by steel weight alone. Rollers, beams, long posts and connectors all add cost. Our roller barrier has a MASH TL4 crash test report (100 km/h), reviewable under NDA. Get a roller barrier quote.
Our guardrail accessories RFQ checklist and guardrail BOQ checklist help you list every part.
It depends on steel price, thickness, posts and freight. Our reference W-beam system weighs about 10.5 kg per foot. Multiply by the current steel rate, then add parts and freight.
Yes. Our reference thrie-beam system uses about 1.35 times the steel of W-beam per meter. Its supply cost is usually 30–40% higher.
A roller barrier usually costs about 2–3 times a W-beam per meter. The final price depends on the configuration, post length, roller material and quantity.
No. Our quotes cover supply only, on FOB or CIF terms. Installation, traffic control and site work are priced by the local contractor.
Match the thickness and zinc class to your specification, not above it. Order full containers. Quote rails, posts and accessories together to avoid separate freight.
