Highway Guardrail Components and BOQ Checklist
A practical checklist for confirming the parts of a steel highway guardrail system before procurement, installation or repair. Use the approved drawing and bill of quantities as the controlling documents.
1. Start with the Barrier System, Not an Individual Part
A steel guardrail works as a connected roadside system. Before requesting a quotation or spare part, establish whether the installation is a W-beam guardrail, a thrie-beam guardrail, a bridge or transition arrangement, or another approved layout.
Then collect the current drawing, the relevant BOQ lines, clear site photographs and the location reference. This gives the supplier and project team enough information to identify a compatible component set without relying on a name or photograph alone.
2. Core Components to List in a Guardrail BOQ

3. How the Parts Fit Together
Rail + splice connection
The beam panels form a continuous line. Confirm the required profile, joining arrangement and the hardware specified for that connection.
Spacer + post connection
The spacer or blockout is selected with the post and rail arrangement. Do not substitute a different shape merely because the overall length appears similar.
Terminal + transition
End and transition details are assemblies. Their BOQ must include every required rail, post, plate, anchor and connection component shown on the approved drawing.
4. Rail Panel: Seven Details That Belong in the Enquiry
“W-beam” or “thrie-beam” alone is not a purchase specification. Both profile families are available in more than one configuration. The quotation request should allow the supplier to compare the requested beam with the approved drawing before production.
Specify W-beam or thrie-beam and attach the section drawing.
State the required steel grade or project standard; common supply uses Q235 or Q345 grades where approved.
Give the drawing-required base-metal thickness and tolerance, not only a visual comparison.
Confirm the overall panel geometry, effective coverage and overlap arrangement from the drawing.
Include punch-hole type, position and quantity; these govern whether the rail can connect correctly.
State galvanized coating or another approved finish, plus the project’s inspection requirement.
Confirm overlap direction and the intended side of installation where the layout requires it.
Catalogue supplies commonly describe galvanized or coated corrugated beams in Q235/Q345 steel and project-specified dimensions. Those are supply options, not a substitute for the project’s approved system detail.
5. Post and Spacer Checks
Posts may be specified in different profiles according to the approved layout and site condition. When preparing a BOQ or enquiry, link the selected post to its matching spacer or blockout, rail connection and foundation or embedment detail.
- For an H post, confirm the approved rail and spacer connection detail.
- For a Sigma post, confirm its profile, layout and the drawing-required connection points.
- For U, C or round posts, verify the system drawing rather than selecting from a visual match.
- State the required finish and any project-specific inspection or packing requirement in the BOQ.
6. Fasteners Are BOQ Items, Not Miscellaneous Extras
Bolts, nuts and washers should be listed against their actual connection purpose: rail splice, rail-to-spacer connection, spacer-to-post connection, terminal connection or transition detail. A complete guardrail accessories schedule prevents missing hardware at installation and helps avoid incompatible substitutions during maintenance.
The drawing above illustrates why a hardware request needs more than a general “guardrail bolt” description. Bolt head style, shank length, washer form and the intended connection can differ. List each set against its drawing reference, then confirm compatibility with the specified rail, spacer and post assembly.
7. Coating, Packing and Delivery: State Them Before Quotation
The component is not fully specified until its finish and delivery condition are clear. For roadside applications, identify the required corrosion-protection system and have it checked against the project specification. Do not assume that a coated product photo confirms the coating mass, thickness or inspection standard needed for your project.
Finish confirmation
List the specified finish, relevant standard, inspection method and any requirements for repairs to damaged coating after installation.
Packing plan
Separate long rails, posts and small hardware in the packing list. Identify bundles, cartons or pallets so receiving teams can verify quantities efficiently.
Shipping information
State destination port, delivery term, preferred shipment window and any container-loading or marking requirements in the enquiry.
8. Receiving Inspection: A Simple Site Checklist
Receiving inspection is the last practical chance to identify a mismatch before installation begins. Compare delivered labels and quantities against the packing list and the approved BOQ; then use sample checks to confirm the parts are appropriate for the intended assembly.
- Separate components by BOQ line: keep rail panels, posts, spacers, terminal parts and fasteners identifiable during unloading.
- Check physical condition: note damaged bundles, bent components, damaged coating, missing hardware packages or mixed parts before acceptance.
- Compare samples with the drawing: verify the profile, hole arrangement, connection points and relevant finish for the selected sample.
- Protect traceability: retain package marks, packing lists, inspection documents and photographs according to the project’s document-control procedure.
- Resolve discrepancies before installation: do not force a part into an assembly when its connection detail does not agree with the approved drawing.
9. Pre-Order Checklist

- Rail type, profile and connection details identified
- Post, spacer and foundation or embedment arrangement confirmed
- Fasteners listed by connection type rather than as a single general item
- Terminal and transition assemblies included where applicable
